Guest guest
Hi Peg Here's how I handle eating out and eating well: First, I limit my eating out to just one day a week. This makes life easier on both my pocketbook and my body, plus I still get to be sociable with my co-workers or friends. Second, I base my decision of whether or not to go out for lunch on where folks are deciding to go. There are some restaurants where vegan isn't an option, nevermind fat-free. Third, I research the common lunch restaurants in advance and memorize what I can/will eat in each one. I have discovered that being ff and vegan actually makes making lunch decisions easier since I can eliminated 90+% of the menu. :-) In most restaurants, I skip the entree section of the menu entirely and just look at the side dishes and salads. I almost never eat dessert when I'm eating out. Most of the time what I end up eating is a plain baked white potato (often with mustard) or sweet potato, steamed veggies (no sauces) or a salad with some lemon slices or tomato juice. Sometimes I have to get picky about the veggies or the salad, but I haven't had any trouble asking the server to find out if the veggies or salad are prepared with meat, cheese, egg or fat and to find out if mine could be made without meat, cheese, egg and fat. I have also asked if I can have extra veggies (cukes, tomatoes, etc.) on my salad since I " m skipping the meat and cheese. I have, on occasion, mentioned that I am allergic to dairy and egg if I don't think my requests will be taken seriously. I have not mentioned " vegan " since there is a great deal of confusion as to what that means. (My co-workers think it means you only eat raw food.) If the side salads are small, I may order two of them, just to get filled up. I have also been known to order two plain baked sweet potatoes. My co-workers think I'm nuts, but I've lost 15 pounds in the last six weeks and I feel great, so they can think I'm nuts all they want. I don't know where you live, but there seem to be Olive Garden restaurants in a lot of places. The minestrone soup is vegan, as is the Capellini Pomodoro. You can order the salad without dressing and without cheese. You can also get the bread sticks without the garlic butter on them, though I am not certain their bread is vegan. I just avoid the bread sticks since I can't eat just one anyway. :-) Good luck!
