Hey Mark,

Thanks for sending the link to this video! (I'm repeating it here)

http://soulveggie.blogs.com/my_weblog/2007/05/diet_mcdougalle.html

It's very good, although I have to say that I don't see the

" conflict " as a " conflict " .

Certainly there are points they present as conflicts -- but I'm not

really swayed by them.

McDougall is a bit defensive about the word starch -- initially he

pointed to his max-weight-loss

plan (as being in-the-same-direction as Furhman's) -- and Furhman

certainly agreed that

more starch is okay for people who don't need more weight loss.

I see the " conflict " as being about how they each conceptualize their diets and

where they think of the emphasis.

I'm not sure what McDougall's point about " keeping it simple " for

compliance is all

about -- Furhman's guidelines are not exactly complex..... they are probably

simpler than McDougall's are....

Anyway, I'm rereading both McDougall and Ornish's " max weight loss " books.

It is fun to see these folks together -- I wonder if the REST of the

panel discussion

[that this was part of] is available? Do you know? I see there's a name of the

conference listed [Expo 2006] in the video -- and I see this is a

youtube video,

so I guess I'll look and see what I find.

I also found your post about " suicide watch " an interesting slant on

a problem I've been

talking about for years and years.

http://soulveggie.blogs.com/my_weblog/2009/03/suicide-watch-or-the-price-of-bein\

g-vegan.html

I actually have a " wider version " of the problem you describe, since

there are additional

approaches (besides diet) that I believe can be hugely more

cost/pain/risk than what's

" standard care " -- for cancer, for many organ diseases. (Yes, of

course I'm aware of the

connections to diet -- and no, that is not what I'm referring to.)

Cancer is the one that I feel most provoked by -- I seem to be

surrounded by it.

I'm generally pretty polite -- " would you be interested in

alternative therapies for cancer? "

And I do take no for an answer, and I do hear no (as well as sometimes yes.)

I haven't found the complete outlet yet for what goes on inside me

about all this.

BTW, would someone please inform me if this is too much discussion

for this list.

I realize this is a recipe-focused list, and I apologize if this is

too much commentary.

best,

Moria
