Trimming Your Cranky Posts--Everyone Please Read

There's been a lot of discussion lately around the trimming of posts, and I'd been hoping not to have to step in (as a moderator, I really really hate moderating), but I guess it's time. Basically, you're all right. Posts should be trimmed, and yet, if you're going to point that out to the whole group, please try not to be snide about it. I know how tedious it can be to try to read a group's digest when so many people fail to trim out the unnecessary replies and post footer; however, almost all of us have at some time forgotten to do so (I know I have). So let's try to be gentle when pointing it out. Call me Little Mary Sunshine, but I much prefer a happy group to a cranky one.

If you're new to email lists are are not sure what we're talking about, here's a brief how-to: When you reply to someone else's message, you should first (after hitting reply) highlight everything that's non-essential to your reply (press the left button on your mouse and drag to select the text) and click Delete. You can then type your reply below or above the part you left behind, the quote from the previous post you're responding to. If your email software hasn't already set this quote apart in some way, using a > symbol at the beginning of each line of quoted text will let people know that it's a quote.

I hope that explanation makes sense and that we'll soon be seeing a lot of pleasant, neatly trimmed messages that contain...{drum roll please} fat-free vegan recipes!
