Guest guest
I found this neat article by McDougall on the top of " When friends ask why you avoid added vegetable oil " at: http://www.drmcdougall.com/misc/2007nl/aug/oils.htm It's a bit long and full of big words, but it's very well referenced. I've also posted a couple of short key excerpts (imho) at my blog. FYI, Mark http://www.soulveggie.com

He stopped me with the first sentence. I *hate* the fat-hating rhetoric he spews, though I respect him in many other ways. I'm not ugly just because I'm fat. People are not ugly and unattractive just because they're fat. Fat people are as likely to be beautiful as thin people, and it's a cultural prejudice that says otherwise. See http://www.adipositivity.com/ and http://www.belliesarebeautiful.com/ and http://www.therotund.com/?page_id=190 and many many many more places on the web where people are speaking out against the bigotry hurled at fat people. I'm a beautiful woman. Just as my two boyfriends, whose eyes light up when I enter the room. I'm also a fat woman who prefers her food to be as healthful as I can make it, so I try to limit (and, often, eliminate) added fat in my food. Dr. McDougall doesn't speak for me on this one, is what I'm saying. I urge those who take the time to look at the article not be biased or prejudiced by those opening sentences of said article. To me, they are irrelevant to the issue of added fat/oil being a real problem in terms of health, particularly heart disease (which is killing some 400,000 men and women every year) and that it's hard for most people (and vegans) to wrap their cerebrums around it. Whether or not McDougall is suffering from a cultural bias or the use of the word " attractive " is debatable, it's not the key ideas being discussed. Personally, I don't find " unattractive " and " ugly " as being synonymous. I also think a case can be made that most subjectivity may have a cultural bias. Who's to definitively say what's attractive or not? Some people like the rugged wrinkle look excessive smoking causes in men, is it a cultural bias for others to find it unattractive? Me? I'd rather try to heart attack proof myself, keep my weight at what is considered in a healthy range, than worry about whether being fat is attractive or not. Someone doesn't like the way I look, I don't care and don't consider it a cultural bias as anyone focusing on just one aspect of the totality of an individual is inherently biased, regardless of cultural upbringing. For what it's worth, I've been 75 lbs. heavier, 15 lbs. lighter... the former unhealthy, the latter, healthier. Am striving to keep the latter. Anyway, may I politely suggest that any major continuation of this conversational thread strays from List Charter. My post was about the dietary and health issues he wrote about, not a debate on whether McDougall is culturally biased or not.
