Why fat free?-Rose

Rose,

I am not sure why fat-free is singled out but I do have an opinion on eating that is validated by the director of the Lifestyle Medicine department of my local hospital, Feather River Hospital.

Picking up a plant and eating it includes oil and or juice, fiber, pulp, skin, seeds, nutrients, etc. Plants are made as they are with all of these things combined, in the correct combinations of all of the above. If we throw out the whole plant and just eat the juice or oil, we are excluding all of the other healthy things that keep this in balance. For example, if we drink orange juice, pulp-free, we are getting a lot of sugar and missing out on the natural balance an orange provides.

The same with oil. If we throw out the plant and just use the oil, we are putting things out of balance. This gets our bodies out of balance.

Now many may disagree with me, and I respect all other thoughts. But for my eating, I don't drink juices or use much oil. I will use a tablespoon here and there. And I will use vegetable broth for sauteeing because things will get too dry with nothing. But this is severely limited. I don't drink any juice at all, either vegetable or fruit. I eat the whole thing, and include the skin, inside parts and seeds whenever possible. Sure, there are nutrients in carrot juice. But what about the natural fiber that should be going with it?

We get olive oil in olives, orange juice in oranges, carrot juice in carrots, etc., etc. And all in the natural way we are supposed to be getting it. So there is my two cents and I appreciate all other opinions. And of course, raw and fresh is the best of all.

Well said Shelley,

Once you start processing foods to concentrate certain parts of it (the oil, the sugar, the salt, etc.) and then eat that concentrate you're... well...pigging out basically. I think everyone knows that, some just have to hear it more often. My mother always accused my father of the attitude of, "if one's good a million's better". While that might apply to dollar bills, it very often doesn't apply to food. And so my point is: You don't really even have to know exactly why oil is bad for you, just apply the theory that if one is good a million is not always better.
