Guest guest
Hi Everyone: I have a strange question.I wondered what size portions most everyone is supposed to eat when eating vegetarian? I am trying to moderate my portions and don't know what portion sizes to use when eating vegetarian. Thank you. Mark

I know, not very helpful. This vegan food pyramid has portion sizes on it. You might find it helpful: http://www.nutrispeak.com/vegan_food_guide.htm (the pyramid says how many servings for balanced nutrition and there is a chart underneath the pyramid that explains what a serving is.) Hope this helps! Sparrow
Guest guest
HI Mark What a blessing of abundance we have in America, and that very overabundance is killing us. Research has shown that a calorie-restricted (naturally occuring with FFV) optimal nutritional eating habits promote not only a healthier life but a much longer one. The Okinawans , some of the longest lived people on earth, eat primarily a low-low-fat plant-based diet. They have a saying "Eat till you' are only 80% full"~~A wonderful philosophy, it keeps the body lean and tuned, the metabolism running most efficiently. I have been trying this the last few months. Eliminating seconds, serving a small beautifully served portion makes one more aware of the sacred in the meal. Even the scriptures recomend this (paraphrased) "Better is a dish of vegetables where love is, than a fattened ox served with contention." Clear skies! lc carol I have a strange question.I wondered what size portions most everyone is supposed to eat when eating vegetarian? I am trying to moderate my portions and don't know what portion sizes to use when eating vegetarian. Thank yo
Guest guest
For a meal, I like to go by what amount would fit into one of my cupped hands. In this regard, there is a lot of air and water in some foods, so I'll have bigger portions of foods such as salads than I would for a dense food such as split pea soup. For a snack, I start with a couple bites and see if that is enough. If I'm really hungry, then I have to be careful not to overdo it. Even for an old gal, I like to keep my stomach as flat as possible, and overly distending it with food seems to have a negative impact on my ability to zip up my jeans! Also, there's no point in doing sit- ups and all, and then turn around and totally stuff yourself. I also have a lot more energy when I don't overeat. Guest guest
BTW, the USDA and the Dept. of Health and Human Services (the creators of the original food pyramid and the concept upon which this was based) recreated its food pyramid in 2005, changing the ratios of things and adding exercise. After looking all over their site, I never found a description or graphic representation of a vegan version. They lump everyone together, saying, " The Dietary Guidelines is applicable to the food preferences of different racial/ethnic groups, vegetarians, and other groups. " http://www.health.gov/dietaryguidelines/dga2005/document/default.htm One thing I did find interesting, in light of the recent discussion of what is a vegetarian/vegan, was that they defined the terms. They say in the glossary, " Vegetarian—There are several categories of vegetarians, all of whom avoid meat and/or animal products. The vegan or total vegetarian diet includes only foods from plants: fruits, vegetables, legumes (dried beans and peas), grains, seeds, and nuts. The lactovegetarian diet includes plant foods plus cheese and other dairy products. The ovo-lactovegetarian (or lacto-ovovege-tarian) diet also includes eggs. Semi-vegetarians do not eat red meat but include chicken and fish with plant foods, dairy products, and eggs. " Not that I'm saying the USDA is the " be-all and end-all " on the subject (particularly in light that I have read that some of the committee that designed/wrote the Food Pyramid were involved with the dairy and beef industries), but they do have some valuable information in that report, especially in the appendices where they have tables giving the amounts of certain nutritional elements in certain foods and their serving sizes. They also include a table of plant-based foods containing calcium that is separate from the non-plant-based foods.
