So did mine! What a surprise! Actually, it was just the two of us this Thanksgiving, so all our food was low to no fat and completely vegan. My husband (60 years old) went totally vegan from being a serious meat and potatoes kind of guy 3 months ago and literally overnight after his doctor found symptoms of heart disease and told him he needed to see a cardiologist. It scared him so much, he told the doctor, he was giving his vegan wife a year to change his health with diet (I think it didn't hurt that he'd watched Super Size Me a couple of times) before going to a cardiologist and going on statins. He's been incredible. Lost 20 lbs., looks and feels great. He has more blood tests in a couple of weeks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, because he said if there is no change he's going back to the way he ate before. I really think he will do this as every chance I get I talk about veganism from not only the standpoint of health, but environment, etc., etc. Mary (I usually lurk ... going into my cave again.) Guest guest
Hi Alice and all, I have the book Mad Cowboy and also his other one, I think the newer of the two, No More Bull, which is also good. My husband isn't much of a reader, so I mainly feed him verbally what I am learning. And at 6'4", 200 lbs., he doesn't take any guff from anybody with regard to his diet, which is really funny to watch. I'm just sitting back and eating it all up, no pun intended. And like you, I went into this first for ethical reasons. I'm glad people change to a vegan diet for whatever reason. I am so grateful to Susan for her blog and for this group. She and all of you have been an incredible help to me as I help him get healthier. Have a great day, MaryCheck out AOL Money Finance's list of the hottest products and top money wasters of 2007. Guest guest
hi mary that's wonderful about your husband's diet change! do you know the book 'mad cowboy' by howard lyman? the author was a cattle rancher for years, but became vegan when he developed serious health problems. it's really well written, from a very no-nonsense health-oriented point-of-view (personally, i'm vegan for ethical reasons, with the health benefits a nice add-on!). might be a good one for your husband to read, and for him to show to other guys who might be giving him a hard time about his new diet... best wishes alice On 24 Nov 2007, at 05:19, marylizzy wrote: > In a message dated 11/23/2007 8:28:13 AM Mountain Standard Time, > veggies writes: >> On the upswing, my DH liked my tofurkey better than the turkey >> turkey. So did mine!
