V8 / products that are considered to be vegetarian

"Considered vegetarian" and "definitely vegetarian" are completely different things. What one person "considers" to be vegetarian may actually not be. It is the standard belief that eggs & dairy are "considered" to be vegetarian, but neither of those things are plants, so why are they considered to be vegetarian? What part of the word "vegetarian" translates to eating animals and animal by- products? Whoever came up with that idea should be shot.Eggs definitely shouldn't be "considered vegetarian", as they have the potential of becoming a chicken (or other type of egg-laying animal). I don't know how often and how many people ask vegetarians & vegans if they eat fish and seafood because somehow, these people think that fish and squid and oysters belong to the plant kingdom. In some parts of the world, if there is no meat or poultry or fish in a dish (but still has a broth made from meat juices), or if it is cured meat like pepperoni or sausage, it is

"considered vegetarian". I would like to know what Campbell's "considers" to be vegetarian ingredients. From the response that was given below (Thanks for providing that BTW), it appears that even the people who make V8 don't always know what's in there, so how can you believe someone that works there either (Chemist or not)? Without knowing any background at all about my friend ( who is an extremely intelligent and creative ethical vegan), you just assume she knows nothing about what goes into V8 and I shouldn't listen to what she has to say about it just because she is currently working in a cafe? How many companies have inside secrets or information that if the public knew about would ruin them? How do you know that Campbell's doesn't have secrets of its own that it wouldn't want to go public? Some companies will flat out say on the label that they really have no clue what is going into their product on any given day in not so many words ("May

contain one or more of the following: Vegetable oil, coconut oil, lard, beef fat, tallow,..."). Food manufacturers can get away with a LOT. That so-called "non-dairy creamer" isn't really non-dairy (which you all probably already knew, but wouldn't use the product anyway regardless). If you are one of the few who didn't know, It contains casein, which is a dairy by-product. They can get away with saying it's non-dairy because the percentage that is in there is below a certain percentage and is thus nonexistent as far as they are concerned. The bottom line is that food labeling regulations aren't nearly as strict as they should be. Be wary of anything that contains "natural flavorings" unless they specify on the label what source(s) they are from (usually plant or animal, though they can be bacterial or fungal in some cases, such as in soy yogurt or a mushroom base, for example). Campbell's doesn't have to divulge their proprietary secrets, but

they should be able to tell you if something is always truly of 100% plant origin or not. Sounds to me like they can't provide this information and what the consumer is getting in the end may or may not be 100% vegetable juice like it says on the label. All it is claiming is that 100% of the juice itself is made from vegetables. That claim doesn't include the seasonings and natural flavorings. Someone on one of the vegan message boards I go to did. Here was their response: "Unfortunately, we're not able to supply you with a definitive list of our vegetarian products. At this time, the following products are considered vegetarian: Campbell's Tomato Juice Pace Picante Sauce Pace Refried Beans Pace Thick & Chunky Salsa Prego Organic Pasta Sauce R & W Condensed Vegetarian Vegetable Soup Soup At Hand Classic Tomato Soup Swanson Organic Vegetable Broth Swanson Vegetable Broth V8 Juice V8 Splash Juice Product recipes change frequently and ingredients

are periodically added and replaced which makes it difficult to maintain an updated list of products that either contain or lack a particular ingredient." http://www.postpunkkitchen.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=736862#p736862 Sue in NJ
