Importance of educating Prop 8 protestors re: not mocking Prop 2- very good essay

Hi Everyone. I have become aware that protestors against the passage of Prop 8 ( which outlaws gay marriage) are tying it to Prop 2 (better conditions for farmed animals) by saying things like " Great, now chickens have more rights than people " .

 

This sentiment is seen in signs carried by protestors, in emails to Prop 8 folks (even from official Prop 8 groups), in articles and is being expressed vocally at anti-prop 8 rallies. The essay I have provided a link for does an excellent job of saying why this is unfair and damaging.

 

It is well-written and explains how the Prop 8 people are mad at the wrong people (passing Prop 2 had nothing to do with Prop 8 also passing) and that it is also wrong to say that chickens (or other farmed animals) now have more rights than people do.

 

It is important that people understand that passing Prop 2 had zero to do with Prop 8 passing and that wanting justice for one group does not mean that you can't want justice for another. It is important because if and when we need our gay brothers and sisters and other Prop 8 folks to help lessen animal suffering, we don't want them to feel resentment towards animals and therefore refuse to help.
