Guest guest
The USDA is looking for INPUT into the National School Lunch Program (HELLO VEG*IES!) - I had a jaw-dropping experience when I read this. I received the email from PCRM. Wow. What an opportunity! There is a website with more info on getting your input heard. They also provide a PDF of the proposed legislation details: http://www.regulations.gov/search/search_results.jsp? N=0 & Ntk=P_DocumentId & Ntx=mode+matchall & Ntt=FNS-2008-0011- 0001 & sid=11CAAB075A80 The PCRM Alert article is attached. For more detail on the " Recommended Changes " : http://www.healthyschoollunches.org/changes/index.cfm For general information about the Child Nutrition Act, see this website: http://www.frac.org/html/federal_food_programs/programs/nslp.html The link to PCRM (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine) is: http://www.pcrm.org The DEADLINE to submit your comments/suggestions is October 15, 2008. Please support the PCRM in the Child Nutrition Act and their request for a plant-based diet option in schools that is supported with federal funding commensurate to that of the standard diet. The Child Nutrition Act affects the WIC program too. It's sad that when pregnant moms get coupons for food for themselves and their other children they mostly get cheese, milk and eggs. Kids that are from lower income families (qualifying for free or reduced priced meals) have little options - if any - for a plant-based meal at school. Let's help get them more REAL food too! Whether we like it or not, the USDA is the primary driver behind the nutrition curriculm in our schools. Let them know what you think of the " Milk Group " and the " Meat Group " . Even though California is supposedly a " trailblazer " in this arena, our school still only offers cheese pizza when we ask for a vegetarian meal at school. Maybe federal legislation will help? Please cross-post to all that would encourage that a plant-based National School Lunch Program be available to lactose-intolerant, vegan, vegetarian and kids that just want to eat a healthy hot lunch. Thanks everyone, Wynelle Ulrich
