Guest guest
Dear Community, About a year or so ago I posted some information about Flexpetz, a business that markets companion dogs by the hour or day for people to use and return. The company promotes its offering as “flexible ownership”, suggesting the committed, long-term care provided by devoted pet owners. However, this practice is no more of a commitment than renting a car or DVD. Flexpetz has continued to grow and has outlined new locations to open up shop. Boston was on their list – until the city, becoming the first in the nation, passed a ban renting dogs. This also moved to the state level and Massachusetts passed a ban as well. San Francisco is on the Flexpetz list of cities to expand to. I’m hoping you will work together with me to declare that this business model built on animal exploitation is not welcome here. The banning of renting of all (not just dogs) pets is on the Animal Control and Welfare Commission agenda for this month, September 11. Please let me know if you are connected with a group that will get behind supporting this initiative and join the Coalition to Prohibit the Renting of Pets – California. Emails regarding this effort should be directed to the Coalition at cprpets.cal; questions and requests for more information welcome as well. Statements of support are particularly desired from rescue groups; animal behavior experts; animal welfare professionals and welfare organizations; trainers; animal law professionals; animal control officers; and psychologists, sociologists or social workers (ie, the impact on people and society of treating pets as disposable). Just a reminder that while attachments are allowed to be sent via the list, only those who receive individual messages receive them (i.e. those who are on digest or read messages online in the archives will not get the attachments).
