Guest guest
Please Mark Your Calendar & Act Today To Urge SF Board of Supervisors to Help Animals at SF Zoo Next Tuesday, September 9, 2008, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors is scheduled to consider a ground-breaking ordinance to help animals at the Zoo. Please mark your calendars and join us. There are 3 things you can do to help animals at the zoo - see below. San Francisco is faced with an exciting opportunity - to make the city-owned zoo a model institution for animal welfare and to teach respect and compassion for all. San Francisco Supervisor Chris Daly has introduced an ordinance that addresses longstanding animal welfare problems at the San Francisco Zoo and transforms it into a world-class facility that will make all citizens proud. The SF Zoo ordinance, which builds upon the zoo's successful grizzly bear rescue last year, states directs the zoo to acquire new animals primarily from the U.S. pool of animals (exotic and domestic) in need of placement. The ordinance reflects the recommendations of the city's Animal Control and Advisory Commission, which evaluated the zoo's animal welfare record and identified serious deficiencies. Sadly, the San Francisco Zoological Society is mis-characterizing this progressive proposal . . . these scare tactics are being used to try to kill this much-needed ordinance. WHERE: San Francisco City Hall , 1 Carlton B Goodlett Place , Supervisors' Chambers. WHEN: Tuesday, September 9, 2008 at 2:00p (if you need to come a little later that's ok) WHAT: San Francisco Supervisors' Hearing on S.F. Zoo ordinance ************************* 2. SEND AN EMAIL: In addition to attendance, your email is needed to show the supervisors that the citizens of San Francisco support this ordinance. See draft email message below - please personalize it with any ties you may have to San Francisco or the zoo. Email addresses: Jake.McGoldrick; Aaron.Peskin; Ross.Mirkarimi; Chris.Daly; Bevan.Dufty; Tom.Ammiano; Sophie.Maxwell; Gerardo.Sandoval Dear Supervisors, Four years ago, the Board of Supervisors took action to help the elephants at the San Francisco Zoo. Today, I ask you to take a stand for all the animals at the city-owned zoo. Please support Supervisor Daly's ordinance, which establishes a Supervisor-appointed animal welfare oversight committee and states that the zoo should primarily (not solely) acquire future animals who are in need (i.e rescued animals, etc). After years of animal welfare problems, the zoo cannot be allowed to continue " business as usual. " This ordinance makes good sense: how could anyone object to animal-welfare focused oversight and helping animals in need? Personalize your message here by stating your connection to San Francisco (i.e. resident, employed in, frequent to) and/or the zoo. ************************* 3. CALL THE SUPERVISORS: Lastly, please make a quick call to the supervisors to express your support for this much-needed ordinance and please ask what their positions are on the ordinance. A list of the supervisors' telephone numbers is below. Please make a quick phone call to ask each of the supervisors listed below to support Supervisor Daly's Ordinance 080818. Information is below.
