Dear Everyone,

At around 10 p.m. August 1st, at 98th and Lawlor, Oakland, 2 dogs were shot and thrown out of a moving car . One, the female minature pinscher died. The other, a mixed breed male, survived and is being treated for multiple injuries and starvation. He has been named Little Lance.

One of the vet techs at my vet was working at the Emergency Vet Hospital on University on Berkeley when the dogs were brought in. Initially, they thought Lance was a puppy because he was so small. It turns out he is about 2 and that he is so small due to starvation (if you look at his picture you can see how extremely emaciated he is).

Additionally, both dogs had such trauma that it is believed that they were severely beaten for a long time before being shot and thrown from the car. Oakland services say the shattered bones that both dogs had/have are not consistent with being thrown from a car or shot and are consistent with brutal beatings. Also, both dogs had the same shattered bones and it's very unlikely both dogs fell in exactly the same way from the car.

I have posted some pictures before the info on how you can help. I hope they came out. If not, please go to sfgateDOTcom http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/08/12/BA58129IHB.DTL or insidebayareaDOTcom http://www.insidebayarea.com/ci_10196789?source=most_emailed (hope the urls came out okay, computer problem, if not, to read more, see pictures, google: dogs shot thrown car oakland)

Lance is in remarkably good spirits, stood up a week ago Wednesday and is doing very well, despite the fact that he has a broken back and leg. Shelter workers say it is truly remarkable that he is even alive. For the first days he was in so much pain he did not know what was going on around him. As of last week, he was wagging his tail and giving kisses.

Lance has had and is facing surgery and hospitalization to bring him into a normal weight range (although re-nourishing him could be done in a foster/permanent home).

There is a reward for the capture of the very, very sick person(s) who abused, shot and threw the two dogs from the car. Funds to help pay for his recovery would also be appreciated. A foster mom/dad and/or permanent loving home is needed (if the pics didn't come out, Lance has a velvety brown coat and large beautiful eyes.) Also, he is described as having a very sweet temperament, never having tried once to bite, despite terrible pain.

If you would like to donate to the reward fund or to Lance's medical care or to foster him (Any amount, no matter how small will help)

, please go to Friends of the Oakland Animal Shelter wwwDOToaklandanimalsDOTorg (typed dot, computer problem).

If you have any information that could lead to the arrest of this animal torturer, please also contact Friends of the Oakland Animal Shelter at the above website or call Oakland Animal Services at 510-535-5604.

Thank you.

Stephanie

Hi all,

Looks like there is an update to this story just posted today. One of the photos has the following captions

"Dr. Kimberly Carlson, right, describes the injuries and surgical procedures she performed on Little Lance at a news conference at the Oakland Animal Shelter in Oakland, Calif., on Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. Lance is recovering from injuries after he was shot and thrown out of a moving car in Oakland three weeks ago. More than 400 people donated money for his surgery and over 50 expressed interest in his foster care."
