YOU'RE NEEDED on August 7 at San Francisco City Hall to HELP ANIMALS AT SF ZOO. Your presence is needed to gain supervisor votes for an ordinance that establishes a new standard for animals in zoos worldwide.

*PLEASE* JOIN US NEXT THURSDAY TO MAKE SF ZOO BETTER FOR THE ANIMALS!

The premature and sudden giraffe death yesterday highlights the need for the ordinance currently before the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

Thanks to all who wrote, called and attended the San Francisco Board of Supervisors meeting on July 17 to speak up for the animals at San Francisco Zoo.

We had a great showing of community support at the Rules Committee meeting on Ordinance 080818, introduced by Supervisor Chris Daly, that will transform the San Francisco Zoo to a zoo sanctuary that provides a home for animals in need, such as rescued wildlife and exotic animals confiscated from illegal imports or private pet “ownership” situations. The ordinance would also establish an advisory committee to the Board of Supervisors focused solely on prioritizing animal welfare at the zoo.

The Supervisors delayed a vote on the ordinance until August 7. They also directed the San Francisco Zoological Society, which manages the city-owned zoo, to initiate a dialogue with In Defense of Animals and zoo watchdog Deniz Bolbol in order promote the goal of improving the well-being of animals at the zoo.

You can watch the hearing online at http://sanfrancisco.granicus.com/ViewPublisher.php?view_id=13

Meanwhile, we need EVERYONE to TAKE THESE ACTIONS to help the animals at the San Francisco Zoo:

1) ATTEND THE AUGUST 7, 2008 RULES COMMITTEE MEETING AT 10 AM, San Francisco City Hall , Rom 263 to support this important ordinance. (If you can arrive at 10 a.m., that is ideal, but since the hearing will last several hours, you can arrive by 11:30 a.m. and still give public comments.)

2) EMAIL THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS AND ASK THEM TO CO-SPONSOR ORDINANCE 080818 to help the animals and reform the San Francisco Zoo:

Jake.McGoldrick; Aaron.Peskin; Michela.Alioto-Pier; Carmen.Chu; Ross.Mirkarimi; Chris.Daly;

Sean.Elsbernd; Bevan.Dufty; Tom.Ammiano; Sophie.Maxwell; Gerardo.Sandoval

3) TELL YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY about this issue and ask them to contact the Board of Supervisors and/or attend the August 7 hearing in support of Supervisor Daly’s Ordinance 080818.

For years, animal advocates have been working to improve conditions for the animals at San Francisco Zoo. For too long, the animals’ welfare has taken a back seat to other concerns, such as attracting revenue, bringing in new animals and building frivolous visitor amenities. In the aftermath of the tragic Christmas Day tiger mauling, international attention has focused on the zoo and its numerous animal welfare deficiencies. This has created an unprecedented opportunity to secure real reform at this troubled zoo and Supervisor Daly’s ordinance is the vehicle by which we can make real change.

Thank you for taking this important action today to help the animals at the San Francisco Zoo.
