Guest guest Posted July 13, 2008 Report Share Posted July 13, 2008 Since I work a block and a half from one of SF's newest Vegetarian Food Establishments: The Usual Suspects Cafe I was asked to go by there and see if they are open their regular hours, after hearing about the problems they recently had. So I walked by the cafe, after work on Friday 7 11 08 to see if they were open. They were open, I spoke to one of the waiters just asking him if they were open their " regular " hours and what they were serving. He said that yes they are open their regular hours and now have a new menu for the time being. I did not ask him about the issues with the chefs or anything like that, I just said friends were wondering if they were open. I took a copy of their current menu with me and here is what it says: Rustic Russian Homestyle Vegan Cuisine..... TODAY'S MENU: Appetizers: Eggplant Rolls Lobbies (Green Peas + Tomatoes) Soup of the Day: Borsh Salad: Cabbage and Carrot Entrees: Ragu Vareniks Dessert: Blintzes (crepes) with Chocolate, Apricot, or Pluot Butter I am not sure if they are going to continue serving " Rustic Russian Vegan Cuisine " or return to what they had before the chefs left. Even though it appeared that they were open for normal business I'd still recommend calling ahead to see what they are going to be serving. I'm glad it's still vegan but it's weird to have written a review as for the moment anyway, it's an entirely new menu from the two times I've eaten there. That was a bit of a surprise (vegan Russian food?), but the food was awesome (I was with a large group, and we literally ordered everything on the menu). The highlight was the crepe with chocolate, which really tasted like vegan nutella--but that they made themselves. Not sure the future status of the menu--I think they're happy so far so will stick with it if it's going well--but I'd recommend the food for sure. It's def not the vegan pizza or seitan from before, though. The owner wants to have more whole foods, less processesd. Bon appetit!
