SF Commission Scheduled to Vote on Recommendation Please Help Transform SF Zoo to Animal-Focused Rescue Facility Attend Tuesday's Noon SF Animal Welfare Commission Meeting on March 18, 2008 The San Francisco Commission on Animal Control and Welfare is scheduled to vote on a recommendation to the Board of Supervisors regarding animal welfare issues at the San Francisco Zoo, and they want to hear from you. This vote was not taken at the last meeting due to a clerical error. We have another chance to encourage the Commission to send a strong message to the Supervisors that a serious change in the

management and direction at the zoo are needed. Please attend this meeting to give the animals a voice! What: Commission Meeting on SF Zoo When: Tuesday, March 18, 2008, 12:00 p.m. Where: San Francisco City Hall , 1 Dr Carlton B. Goodlett Place, Room 416 (fourth floor) In 1997, San Francisco voters passed a $48 million bond measure sold to the public as a mechanism to improve conditions of the animals at the zoo, yet much of this money was spent on visitor amenities including new gift shop, cafes, conference centers, etc. Over a decade later, many animals continue to suffer in outdated enclosures that zoo experts have said resemble "third world" zoos. San Francisco can do

better and we need YOUR help to make it happen. Obviously, something is broken at our zoo, and the Commission needs to hear from Bay Area residents who want to make this public institution the best it can be for the animals, change direction of the zoo and hold management and Recreation and Park Commission oversight accountable. Talking Points: San Francisco deserves a zoo that makes our city proud. Please urge the Commission to push for: - A zoo that places a priority on animal welfare- An independent animal-welfare focused, Board-appointed Commission to ensure the well being of animals at the zoo - Bigger, better, and safer enclosures for the animals- No new animals until we take care of the ones we already have- A commitment to take care of animals for life instead of shuffling them around from zoo to zoo- A focus on rescuing animals in need instead of acquiring them from captive breeding facilities or wild habitats - Thank the Commission for addressing the animal-welfare problems at the zoo The Commission's recommendation is critical to attaining our goal of persuading the SF Board of Supervisors to hold hearings and take concrete action to improve animal welfare at the zoo. Your voice is needed to make meaningful change for the animals held in inhumane conditions at this zoo. Please attend this meeting. Thank you! For more information call 650.248.4489.
