I spend some time at a primate sanctuary in florida every year. I also

send them $. The monkeys are rescued from vivisection labs and the

exotic pet trade. The monkeys live in giant cages, some cages are

bigger than a condo inSF. Is this sanctuary promoting the caging of

wild animals? NO! Can these monkeys just be set free in the cities of

the USA when released from the labs or pet-trade? NO.

The countries these monkeys are native to will not take them back for

release because they have their own pet-trade problems. There are very

few programs for rehabilitating captive-bred monkeys into the wild.

Assuming we could get every monkey free from labs and pet owners and

assuming we could sneak across borders in Central America to release

them, could they survive amongst established troops who are not

welcoming to " strangers? "

I recently rescued a Southeast Asian fish

from a person on craigslist. My fish lives in an aquarium on my dining

room table. He is a very happy, spoiled fish in a beautiful tank. Am I

cruel because I have a rescued fish in a tank? Should I buy an airline

ticket to Vietnam so I can put him back into the rice paddy mud where

he comes from? He was born in captivity and would not survive.

Should we all send our cats and dogs

back into the wild because in their DNA, to the core, they are wild

animals?

Sure, keeping birds, fish, hamsters, mice, rats,

chinchillas,turtles,etc...sucks and the entire pet trade is evil and

unnatural. But most of these captive bred animals could not survive in

the wild. Sure, the pet trade starts with animals stolen from the wild

and bred for profit. But not one of us have rescued animals that are

wild-born. These animals only know domestication and captivity.

It would be awesome for the entire pet trade to come to an

END...including cats and dogs. Fewer or no cats and dogs reduces

animal cruelty to farmed animals that are processed into cat-food.

Remember, the majority of dog/cat owners do not feed them vegan food.

What is my point?

Give Ching Hai a break and stop associating her with Petco or

Petsmart. Those birds were born in captivity and she probably

treatsthem better than some other human who would keep them in a dirty

cage in their kitchen.
