Pets and Foreclosures

I read today in the Contra Costa Times (12/22/07 edition), wherein a

number of people being foreclosed on, have left their pets behind,

instead of taking them along to their next place to live. A realtor

was shown giving a lot of love to one of the abandoned cats.

It's too difficult for me to understand this, in that I had a long-

lifed dog who I never would think about leaving behind. He and I were

inseparable. He learned to almost think like me, and I like him.

After all, the mortgage folks foreclosed on the family, not the dog.

Clearly, the offending pet owners are not exactly taking the high

road, but simply have no long-term love for their creatures. I

suppose their pets were just a momentary thrill, and after that, the

pet's novelty wore off, and they become like a last year's toys for a

child.

The county issued pet licenses, or pet shops, should require a

waiting period, thus giving the prospective pet guardian time to let

the impulsivenss wear off, after which the would-be owner would be

into their next interest de jour. The more serious and loving owner

can wait, because this would be a long-term thing that can stand the

wait.
