Guest guest
I just went to HEALTH NUTS at 14th St and Webster St in downtown Oakland (address: 340 14th St). The lady that owns the store (Jean) makes this fantastic organic vegan soup with carrots, celery, zucchini, onion, broccoli, red potatoes, cabbage, fennel, basil, soy oil, garbanzo beans, garlic, mushroom and veggie seasonings, and fresh living water. I tried it for the first time today. IT IS DELICIOUS! Health Nuts is mainly a smoothie bar, she has a HUGE MENU with lots of great vegan smoothies, although some are not vegan (i.e., some have honey or dairy). She also makes this dynamite vegan sandwich with hot oven braized tofu, roasted vegetables, VEGENAISE, and whole wheat flat bread. If you work in downtown Oakland and haven't tried HEALTH NUTS yet, definitely go check it out. She also makes this amazing granola bowl with acai fruit, bananas, pineapple juice. Makes for a very FILLING brunch or lunch! She's open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday thru Friday. She grows a lot of the fresh veggies in her own organic garden in Hayward. I don't know if this place is in the Ultimate Guide or Veg Finder, but we should totally add it, if it isn't .... Health Nuts doesn't have a web site yet, but I'm thinking about helping Jean get one started. She totally needs more publicity. She has been losing money on the place for 7-8 years (the whole time it has been open), and each year she has to replace more and more of her healthy vegan stuff with other less healthy non-vegan stuff to try to get more customers. She now sells sandwiches made with meat, and she now has a frozen dairy yogurt machine (just got that this year, but IT IS ORGANIC ... she says she is hoping to get a frozen soy yogurt machine), in an effort to try to keep this business afloat. BTW, she also has an Italian gelato counter, with some a couple vegan sorbets included. It makes me sad because she makes such fantastic home-made food, but so much of it she has had to give up. For example, she used to grow her own wheat grass, but she can't afford the time to make that anymore, since so few people were buying it. Anyway, if anybody out there wants to do a pro bono web site for a good cause, give JEAN at Health Nuts a call ... 510.208.3272. Or e-mail me. I am totally into giving a hand to this hard-working lady. From the business card ... " Health Nuts: Power Smoothies and Fresh Juices. " " Home-made vegan soups, sandwiches, and hot vegan plates.
