Reactive Hypoglycemia / Food Allergies - revised message

When I became a vegetarian twelve years ago, I though I would " live

another thousand years " ; little I knew. It takes a lot more than just

diet in order to remain healthy, or reverse disease. In fact, lack of

appropriate knowledge in vegetarianism, can actually invite illness. In

my opinion, in order to regain one's health, or remain healthy, one has

to take a multifaceted approach that encompasses more than just diet.

Exercise, relaxation techniques, stress management, socialization, are

some examples. In other words, diet alone " may not cut it " .

One can live without meat and dairy, but believe you me, it is

impossible to live with, or at least have a good quality of life, when

one is afflicted my multiple food allergies and reactive hypoglycemia.

That's the core of my inquiries. I wanted to know if any other member

of this group is currently dealing with any similarities, or if they

have had these problems in the past, and how they resolved them.

Hi Solvi,

I don't have any food allergies or reactive

hypoglycemia so I can't speak from personal

experience. Regarding reactive hypoglycemia, there are

so many potential etiologies that it's hard to give

general advice without knowing your medical

history/work up. I recommend you discuss this with

your physician and possibly be tested for diabetes and

other metabolic/endocrine abnormalities. Eating

smaller meals more frequently, esp those lower on the

glycemic index, may be helpful if no other correctable

cause is found.

Regarding allergies, I have heard from others that

this book (written by vegetarian dietitians) is a good

resource:

Food Allergy Survival Guide

by

Vesanto Melina, Jo Stepaniak, Dina Aronson

I have a friend who is a vegetarian and a dietitian.

She may be able to give you more personalized advice.

You can email me if you'd like her email address. Or

find another dietitian from yellow pages etc if you

prefer.

Good luck

Bobby
