Hello everybody,

I am thrilled to announce the launch of a campaign to get an

initiative on the November 2008 ballot that, if passed, just might be the

biggest victory for animals EVER—and certainly the biggest victory for

farmed animals. The Humane Society of the United States is supporting

an initiative that would outlaw battery cages for egg-laying hens, gestation

crates for breeding pigs, and veal crates for calves throughout the state of California!

The signature-gathering phase will be extremely challenging

but completely doable if everyone gets behind it. We’ll need about

600,000 signatures throughout the state, and we’ll have 150 days from the

beginning of October to the end of Feb/beginning of March to do it! We’ll

train people in signature-gathering and we’ll need lots of other volunteer

support, so I’ll keep you posted on that! We’ll be having a huge

kickoff party to give more details the last week of September.

Until then, I want you all to keep in mind that this is on

the way! As Californians, we are fortunate to be in a position to make a huge

difference for animals by passing this law, which would outlaw the three most egregiously

cruel farming practices in the state! On average, we’ll need to collect approximately

4,000 signatures per day everyday for 5

months throughout the state, so that means everything from getting

all your friends and family to sign, to signature-gathering at busy festivals

and street corners. We can do this!

I’m also writing to ask if anybody

knows of any office space that could be donated or would be cheap for us to use

from September through March. We’re flexible on the

location, though near transportation is ideal.

Feel free to ask if you have specific questions, but I will

make further announcements in coming weeks as things get going. One exciting

added benefit of campaigns like this is that, in other states, activists have

found that these campaigns have really brought the activist community together

as well as inspired folks who had never before done any activism or considered

themselves as activists to become involved. I’m excited to see all of the

impacts of this campaign—not just for this initiative but in the years to

come!

Looking forward to working with all of you!

“True human goodness, in all its

purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power.

Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test, consists of its attitude

toward those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has

suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem

from it.”
