Guest guest
Does anyone know if Trader Joes’ Soy Cheese slices are vegan? They list lactic acid as an ingredient, but they don’t mention if it is from a dairy or vegetable source. Thanks! Lia
Guest guest
Is this a new product? The last time I looked at any of the TJ brand soy cheeses, they all had casein (milk protein). Anyways, you asked about lactic acid & whether it's vegan -- good question! I used my friend "google" and found this from the Vegetarian Resource Group, http://www.vrg.org/nutshell/faqingredients.htm#lac What about those ingredients that sound like they are from milk, such as lactic acid, lactose, and lactate? If it's lactate or lactic acid, it's not from dairy (exception - sterol lactate due to the stearic acid). "Lac" ingredients are usually produced by a fermentation process using cornstarch or beet sugar. Lactose is always from dairy. Most ingredients made with with calcium are vegan (i.e. calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate). The exceptions are calcium caseinate and calcium stearate. Drink up the calcium fortified o.j. - it's vegan! Bay Area Vegetarianswww.BayAreaVeg.org
