California Healthy Pets Act Now to Be Heard by Senate Committee on July 9

Recently, we wrote to you to let you know that The California Healthy Pets Act (AB 1634)—which would require most cats and dogs in California to be spayed or neutered—had passed the California Assembly's Appropriations Committee and moved on to the full Assembly for a vote. Now that the bill has passed the full Assembly, it has moved on to the Senate for a hearing! The Senate Committee on Business, Professions, and Economic Development has already scheduled a hearing for July 9, and animals need your voice now more than ever. Letters must be sent to the committee by 5 p.m. on Monday, July, 2. Please urge committee members to support AB 1634 today!Please also try to attend the hearing on July 9 in Sacramento at 1:30 p.m.; please arrive by 12:30 p.m. The hearing will take place in Room 3191 at the State

As you may know, California's companion animal overpopulation crisis causes hundreds of thousands of cats and dogs to suffer on the streets, including many who ultimately pay with their lives for their homelessness.If it becomes law, the Healthy Pets Act, AB 1634--which would require most animals older than 4 months to be sterilized--would drastically reduce the number of homeless and unwanted dogs and cats in our state, saving taxpayers an estimated $250 million annually spent on sheltering, caring for, and ultimately killing these animals. It would also make California a safer place for all: According to one Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, male dogs who are not neutered are almost three times as likely to attack a human being than are those who are sterilized.Please help prevent dog bites and save taxpayer dollars as well as hundreds of thousands of animals' lives--vote yes on AB 1634.

What's At Stake:

If it becomes law, AB 1634 will require anyone who owns or possesses an unaltered cat or dog over 4 months old to purchase an intact-animal permit. Violators would be fined, and the money raised from the fines would be used to fund enforcement of the law, public outreach and education efforts, and free and low-cost spay-neuter programs.
