I think the cultured meats, under development, may be ideal in this case. Indeed, I will probably not get a cat (despite my admiration of their intelligence and friendly demeanor) unless cultured meat becomes widely available. Assuming cultured meat will indeed be produced with negligable ill effect to an animal, while I have no particular plans to gobble it myself, it could solve the vegan cat dilemma very elegantly: cat gets meat it naturally is adapted to eat and enjoys, yet no other animal is injured thereby. -DG Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest guest Posted June 14, 2007 Report Share Posted June 14, 2007 I have also been following the progress of cultured meat processing and the idea of feeding it to cats looks exciting to me as well. I currently feed my cats high-end free-range meat-based dry and wet foods because - as many have already said - I do not believe a vegan diet is healthy or appropriate for a cat, and I know the cats themselves would never choose to go vegan if they could make their wishes known to us. While it feels hypocritical to support the slaughter of other animals and it pains me to do so, I believe it would be even more hypocritical to become a cat's guardian only to subject him/her to a diet that for all we know is just downright dangerous.Cultured meat, in addition to allowing us to feed cats real meat without having to slaughter other animals to get it, would also presumably be healthier and disease-free (lab conditions are a lot easier to control than slaughterhouse/meat packing conditions), and would probably require fewer resources to produce and be less of a detriment to the environment than raising entire animals.-Mike Borg ______________________ "Man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats flesh, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite and to act so is immoral." ~ Tolstoy Be a better Globetrotter.
