Unfortunately Fiona Ma has apparently bought into the

misinformation breeders about AB 1634 the statewide mandatory spay/neuter bill.

Please call her if you are in her district and try to change her mind. This is

a huge mistake that will leave us back where we started in California: Needlessly killing more than

800,000 dogs and cats every year due to overpopulation.

Please call your own California Assembly members as well as

was requested in an earlier post. Here is Fiona Ma’s response concerning

the bill:

As a pet owner, I know that we must treat all animals

in a humane way. But it is important to note that different jurisdictions may

face different types of problems regarding overpopulated dogs and cats.

Last session, State Senator Jackie Speier passed Senate

Bill 861 at the request of the City and County of San Francisco.

The bill authorizes local governments to enact dog breed-specific ordinances

pertaining only to mandatory spay or neuter programs and breeding requirements,

provided that no specific dog breed or mixed dog breed shall be declared

potentially dangerous or vicious under those ordinances. As a result, San Francisco enacted

Ordinance 268-05 to enact limited spay and neutering that is breed-specific,

adopted unanimously and signed by Mayor Gavin Newsom on November, 22, 2005.

This is the approach I favor. AB 1634 attempts to

apply a statewide standard on an issue which deeply divides Californians who

care about animals. Due to numerous amendments along the way and an

overreaching statewide application, I could not support the bill in the

Assembly Appropriations Committee.

Please know that I share your commitment to animal

welfare and will continue to work on these issues at the state level. If I may

ever be of assistance in the future, please contact my district office at

415-557-2312.

In Peace and Friendship,

FIONA MA

..Even if you don't live in Fiona Ma's district, please call. The opposition (some even from people out-of-state!) is flooding these swing vote assemblymembers with calls so that harried staffers don't even bother asking where you live. Please call if you have a chance to help balance out the well-funded and well-organized opposition.
