Guest guest
FYI, I called Fiona Ma's office in Sacramento to ask why she spoke against the spay/neuter bill. The man who answered the phone very politely told me that 1. She was concerned about certain provisions of the bill, which he could not elaborate on. [Then why not make that clear and try to work on changing the bill?] 2. She was concerned because it was such a " divisive " issue. [duh!!! -- breeders v. animal activists!] 3. Most of the constituents that she heard from were against the bill!!!!!!! [i told him I find this very hard to believe, unless most of her constituents are breeders, which is unlikely.] He said she is in favor of having local authorities pass " breed-specific " bills. My response to that was that most of the animals euthanized in California are not " breed " animals but rather mixed-breed; and that, if we in San Francisco, who are [as he put it] progressive in this area, have not passed such a bill, why would she think that other communities would? He also said that she abstained from voting out of respect for the person who had authored the bill -- but if, according to Alex, she spoke out against spay/neuter, then it doesn't matter whether she abstained or not. She made her opinion clear. I told him politely that perhaps she needed to spend a day in a high-kill shelter, with the healthy, adoptable animals being killed, to understand the issue better. His response was that she herself has dogs. I should have asked whether THEY were fixed. I know that not everyone in the AR community agrees with this bill [i know there are feral cat issues that are of great concern to us who work with ferals], and I'm sure there are problems with it -- legislation is never perfect. But it's obvious that her constituents who care about animals need to at least express their strong opinions re spay/neuter in general, so that she can't say " most of her constituents are against the bill " -- and by extension, against stronger spay/neuter laws. In any case, that's my humble opinion. But just remember that making a call to those who represent you is NEVER a bad thing. here are her phone numbers: Sacramento: (916) 319-2012 San Francisco: (415) 557-2312 Please call her to express your opinion. She needs to hear from ALL of her constituents. Nadine May
