Guest guest
A big huge THANK YOU to everyone who took the time to fight pet overpopulation and euthanasia on Wednesday. I was told that 600 breeders showed up to oppose spay/neuter, and 350 animal lovers were there to support the bill...yet it still passed! Here's the story: http://www.cahealthypets.com/pdf/May16-2007-approps.pdf Breeders have money to lose, so perhaps that explains why more of them bothered to show up. However, shelter volunteers and rescue people have the passion that comes from seeing sweet, healthy animals killed simply because they were born into a world that didn't want them. That showed in the speeches. The people opposing the bill kept talking about money, or made false claims like " this bill will cause the extinction of the pet " or " no more police dogs, so crime will sky-rocket! " Really bizarre stuff. The authors of the bill are working closely with law enforcement agencies across the state to make sure their services are not harmed, and I don't think I need to comment on " pet extinction. " I was up in the gallery when the legislators asked first the supporters to stand up, and then the opponents. So every single person who drove to Sacramento was needed at that moment. They also had deputies checking on the overflow crowds. This is a huge victory for animals, and it was nice to see so many familiar faces. Thank you! Alex p.s. If you live in San Francisco or Daly City, and Fiona Ma is your Assemblywoman, PLEASE call her. It was so disheartening to hear her side with the Republicans and speak out against this brilliant and kind bill. Calls, e-mails and letters are still needed, from now until June 1--the bill is not law yet. It just takes a moment of your time and you have nothing to lose--nobody's going to attack you or yell at you. The people in the legislative offices will thank you for sharing your opinion. Dogs and cats in the pound can't make phone calls. They need you to do it for them, and they *are* at risk of being attacked or yelled at if we don't speak for them! http://www.cahealthypets.com/

(Although, per Nadine's recent email, Fiona Ma claimed to have heard only from opponents of the bill.)http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_1601-1650/ab_1634_cfa_20070515_162307_asm_comm.htmlSo, don't be shy to speak up for animals!
