Dear Animal Advocates, Companions, Lovers, Liberators and Vigilers! The next vigil/leafleting on behalf of animals (ab)used in laboratory experiments at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will be held on the third Thursday of the month (as usual) - May 17, 4:30 PM (till about 6 PM) at UCSF's Parnassus Campus - that is, 513 Parnassus Avenue in San Francisco. (Please see information on public transportation to UCSF's Parnassus Campus below.) Ban on Use of Animals in Lab Experiments in SF: There has been some talk of approaching San Francisco supervisors about a prospective resolution calling for the ban on the use of our fellow animals (i.e., those other than the human species) in lab experiments in San Francisco. In fact, there was a consensus at the last Vigil Gathering to approach Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi and/or other supervisor(s) on a potential resolution to ban the use of dogs and cats, only, in lab experiments. I have not done so as of yet, partly because in a talk with Dr. Elliot Katz, of In Defense of Animals, he suggested that we include monkeys in the prospective resolution. Yet then that brings the question: What about

pigs? What about sheep? What about mice, rats, hamsters, frogs, etc.? In any case, however we are to proceed, we will need to discuss the matter to reach a consensus (if possible). So, if anyone is interested in bringing about such a resolution, please respond accordingly. Note Regarding Public Transportation to UCSF's Parnassus Campus: If you would like to take public transportation to UCSF, the San Francisco Muni buses #6 and #43 both go right by the vigil's venue on Parnassus Avenue; also you can take the N-Judah streetcar, get off at Carl & Arguello streets, and take the elevator (going up) within the UCSF facility to get to Parnassus Avenue. If you are coming from the East Bay, you can take BART, get off at any stop between Embarcadero and Civic Center in San Francisco, and then take an N-Judah streetcar going outbound (and follow directions above regarding N-Judah streetcar). Hope to see you at the next vigil - take care! Bob O'Brien PS: Did anyone go to World Day for Laboratory Animals on April 24? Just would like a report of what happened, how many protested that day, etc.
