In Veg News I read a distrubing article about ocean pout being used as

anti-freeze in ice

cream, how can you tell if it is in the ice cream you buy, both dairy and vegan?

also, which

brands are using it?

I write the NewsBeet items & column for VegNews. The article from which I got the information (in CounterPunch:

www.counterpunch.org) stated that Unilever has patented this " antifreeze " protein substance derirved from fish blood, so they are the only company using it in ice cream. The company's " Heartbrand " ice creams include Breyer's, Ben & Jerry's, Magnum, Carte d'Or, Solero, and Cornetto (

www.unilever.com/ourbrands/foods/Heartbrand.asp), none of which seem to be vegan. As far as I know, any of these brands may contain the fish antifreeze, but other brands of ice cream, whether dairy or non-dairy, do not (though I can't vouch for what else might be in there).

While we're on the subject, I wrote to the list on April 16th about Working Assets giving their customers coupons for free pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream (owned these days, of course, by Unilever) and urging readers to tell the company to also send coupons for pints of So Delicious dairy-free frozen dessert. Another r wrote back pointing out that you can exchange the coupons for free pints of sorbet at any B & J store. However, it now occurs to me that the sorbet might have fish blood antifreeze in it as well! Anyone interested in the answer to this and other good questions can ask Unilever (

www.unilever.com/resources/contactus.asp).

Yours,
