Guest guest
Advocates for Animals: I recently acquired the following information from browsing through the USDA web site - www.aphis.usda.gov/ac/7023.html - regarding annual reports of research facilities in California. I found the site quite informative - though I must add that it is incomplete and not up to date. Several reports from research facilities in the Bay Area were missing; most notably UCSF's annual report for year 2005. Further, annual reports on the care and use of animals at Fort Miley in San Francisco, where the Veterans Hospital is located, were also missing. And there were no reports for any research facilities yet posted for fiscal year ending 2006. Anyhow, following is what I found out from California research facilities' annual reports to the USDA for 2005: Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute, in San Francisco, (ab)used 8 monkeys and over a dozen cats, according to its annual report to USDA in 2005....Bayer Corporation (ab)used about sixty monkeys, in Berkeley, in 2005....And then there's a large facility - Primate Products Inc. - that, according to its annual report, had over 2,200 nonhuman primates in 2005...and last but not least, Theravance, Inc. (ab)used over 10,000 Guinea pigs in San Francisco, according to its annual report for 2005. Anyhow, just thought that it was appropriate that I report the above with the upcoming World Week for Animals in Laboratories. Which reminds me: Don't forget the upcoming vigil/leafleting for animals (4/19/07) and IDA's upcoming demonstration (4/24/07)--both happening at UCSF's Parnassus Campus--details follow below. ---- The next vigil for animals incarcerated and exploited in laboratory experiments at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) will be on April 19, 4:30 PM (till about 6 PM) at UCSF's Parnassus Campus - that is 513 Parnassus Avenue in San Francisco. For more information, contact Vigil for Animals at vigilforanimals or call 415-751-3756. (Please see information below on public transportation to UCSF's Parnassus Campus.) Also don't forget World Week for Animals in Labs demonstration at UCSF (Parnassus Campus) on April 24 at 11:30 AM, organized by In Defense of Animals (IDA). For more information, please contact Melissa Gonzalez, Campaign Coordinator w/ IDA. Her e-mail address: melissa and phone #: 415-388-9641, ext. 228. Public Transportation to UCSF's Parnassus Campus: If you would like to take public transportation to UCSF, the San Francisco Muni buses #6 and #43 both go right by the vigil's venue on Parnassus Avenue; also you can take the N-Judah streetcar, get off at Carl & Arguello streets, and take the elevator (going up) within the UCSF facility to get to Parnassus Avenue. If you are coming from the East Bay, you can take BART, get off at any stop between Embarcadero and Civic Center in San Francisco, and then take an N-Judah streetcar going outbound (and follow directions above regarding N-Judah streetcar).
