Guest guest
Hi folks We had an excellent dinner on Friday at Layonna's. I had specifically asked the waitress for recommendations and popular dishes, emphasizing that I wanted people to have a good impression of Layonna's. While I can only report specifically for the table I sat at, and the dishes we ordered, I'd say Layonna's has made big improvements to their dishes since our first group dinner last year (November, I think). The Good Food we ordered: Pine Nut Fish (several people thought this was the best dish), Braised Tofu (not just plain tofu, but a special seasoned tofu; this was a favorite) Veggie Bamboo Reeds ((this is the bamboo which is hollowed out and filled with strips of veggies, and then steamed, served like a roll in a light sauce/light taste; mixed reviews) Pan Fried Eggplant (good taste, not greasy; this was a favorite) Curry Chicken (some people liked this, some didn't) Golden Mushroom Noodles (Hong Kong style noodles with unusual mushrooms with long stems and small cap, maybe enoki ?; this was a favorite) Sesame Chicken (battered, deep fried faux chicken is always popular!) Mushroom with Greens (bok choy with Shitake mushrooms) with Brown Rice, all of this cost us a very reasonable $12.50 (including tax/tip) So much food, 7 entrees would have been sufficient. Food was very fresh, and even the fried dishes did not taste greasy or oily. We were told all food is vegan. Beautiful decor, delicious food, ample variety on menu of veggie dishes as well as fake meat dishes. And, dishes are good serving sizes. Eight people shared 8 entrees. This was a great space for a large group dinner. While we had 22 people who RSVP'ed, my crystal ball is still unreliable in determine if more or less will attend. So they let us sit in the back dining room, which is separate from the front dining room. Since we were a very chatty and loud group, this prevented our noise from carrying to the front dining room. The large round tables with spinning centers made sharing food and conversation easy. The only downside was the parking. It took some people ten, 20, even 40 minutes to park. But I guess that's Friday nite in SF! So, we had a few no-shows, which the parking may have contributed to. Since this was a somewhat special event, being the 5 year anniversary of the very first BAV event at Golden Gate Park, we also gave away coupons for free ice cream & gave away a Vegetarian Bay Area book to the winning guess of how many events that Bay Area Veg has held since the beginning. (Go ahead, take a guess! I'll put the number at the very bottom of this email after my signature. You can see past events on our calendar.) Thanks to everyone who attended this dinner, and previous Veganauts dinners. Per our usual routine, summer is very busy for Chris and myself, so we will resume organizing monthly dinners in the fall. If you would like to guest host a Veganauts dinner at your favorite vegetarian restaurant, please email me directly. You choose the date/time that suits your schedule. Cheers, Tammy Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. - Albert Einstein Upcoming Events: 04/19 College leafletting - Academy of Arts University, SF 04/28 Vegan Food Party followed by Joaquin Phoenix documentary - SF 05/01 Lunch, Munch & Mingle - SF Farmer's Market, Ferry Building 05/06 Book Discussion: The China Study - SF More events at http://bayareaveg.org Sign-up for our monthly newsletter to stay informed and active!
