It's almost a shame that your cat does not have a medical problem, because a medical problem is easier to fix than a behavioral problem.

 

First of all, to get the pee smell out of your carpet, Nature's Miracle really is a miracle product. The enzymes, or whatever, in the product take a few weeks to work fully, so the smell gets less and less pronounced with each day. It's imperative to try to remove the smell, not just for the obvious reasons of improving your life and not losing your security deposit, but to keep the cat from identifying it as a feline place to urinate.

 

To make the cat box more desirable to the kitty, you might try purchasing a jumbo-size, covered cat box (for space and privacy--they run around $30) and put cat nip and cat toys near the box to establish it as a cat territory.
