New Years Resolutions: Brave New Me

Hey All.

My original New Years Resolution was going to be to " start leafleting " . But

I've had to

scramble to create a new one: " Must Use Re-Usable Cup At Coffee Shops " , since I

achieved

my first NYR prematurely.

This is because I had such a significant experience leafleting I was hooked

immediately.

I've been lurking on SFBAVeg and Vegan Spam for some time and have put off

leafleting,

despite believing strongly in its effectiveness. Simply put, I was afraid to do

it. How

WRONG I was. Leafleting is simple, is the most efficient way to spend advocacy

time and it

feels great.

So, if you're like me and have been putting off getting out there for fear of

confrontation,

fear no more. Apparently, there is no one formula for successful leafleting,

but here is

what worked for me:

1. Use a giant smile to disarm your recipient. (Make sure you don't have errant

flax seeds

in your teeth.)

2. Be as up-beat and polite, as possible. (I liken this to working in customer

service. It

establishes the tone up-front.)

3. Dress in a manner similar to your target audience. (It says, " See, I'm like

you. You can

be a veg, too. " )

4. Walk while leafleting. (While not everyone prefers this, it makes me feel

more

comfortable, gets my heart rate going and I get to see more of the surroundings

this way.)

I can't express how great it feels when someone purposely stops to ask for a

brochure.

Plus, I don't hesitate to take personal credit for creating one new vegetarian

for every hour

of leafleting.

One last thing. I'd still be hiding out at my desk if it weren't for the

planned leafleting

events. (These were organized by Alex B.) It's like an appointment or like

having a gym

partner. I strongly recommend attending one of these events to get the ball

rolling.

Happy New Year to All
