Guest guest
Thanks for posting your resolutions, Tammy! Great idea. In 2006 I watched a lot of PETA videos, most notably China Fur <http://www.petatv.com/tvpopup/Prefs.asp?video=fur_farm> and Earthlings <http://www.petacatalog.org/prodinfo.asp?number=VP546>. What happens to animals is simply inexcusable and as Tammy said, most people wouldn't support it /if they knew about it/. That's all it takes for most people--education and speaking out. I am so grateful for the people who did the undercover investigations and A/V work necessary to make the videos available today. I could never do what they did, but I can at least do my part to get those videos out to the public. So my New Year's Resolution is to hand out a minimum of 3,000 Vegetarian Starter Kits: http://www.alexbury.com/index.php?title=making_72_new_vegetarians_in_one_year & mo\ re=1 & c=1 & tb=1 & pb=1 <http://www.alexbury.com/index.php?title=making_72_new_vegetarians_in_one_year & m\ ore=1 & c=1 & tb=1 & pb=1> I'm making this a public announcement because then I'll have to do it! I just finished my kick-off first four events for this project (yes, I know, it's not 2007 yet but I wanted to get going) and they were soooo fun I'm embarrassed. http://www.alexbury.com/index.php?m=20061215 http://www.alexbury.com/index.php?m=20061224 http://www.alexbury.com/index.php?m=20061225 http://www.alexbury.com/index.php?m=20061231 They were more like four fun parties than " activism, " which sounds so serious and difficult. I'll do at least one leafleting event a month but I hope to do two or three most months. The next one is January 7: http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.htm?EID=1509#1509 Be there or be totally, completely, miserably square. My other resolutions are related. I made sure to combine things I like doing and things I want to do with my activism. Leafleting events will help me achieve most, if not all, of my resolutions: 1. Spend more time walking around the Bay Area, both to exercise and to get to know these great cities. 2. Spend more time with really excellent people, to deepen friendships and form alliances for doing activism together--it's much easier to do something when you're with a friend. Plus if I have more friends then I'll have more people to eat with, people who will cook for me, and way more gossip. 3. Make myself do fun things at least once a month, so I don't get burned out. Today's leafleting was " work, " but it sure didn't feel like it, and I was refreshed (and hyper) at the end. 4. Meet Gavin Newsom and Jerry Brown at least once. 5. Cooking: Spend more time sharing tips and recipes for _easy_ vegan cooking, so that people considering a vegan diet can do it with a minimum of fuss and bother. There's lots of great vegan cookbooks and restaurants and products out there, but many of them are too complicated or too rich/expensive/unhealthy for quick, satisfying everyday home cooking. 6. Support PETA and Bay Area Vegetarians more. PETA is the best large group in existence and gets the veg word out to millions of people every single month, if they have the support they need. And BAV is the best local group, reaching thousands of people in the Bay Area. Nice combination of macro and micro. Riding their coattails, both PETA and BAV, means my efforts will be magnified and simplified. For example, why should I bother putting together veg information when PETA has already has the Vegetarian Starter Kit? And why should I try to start a new group for local leafleting when I can work through BAV and reach 4,000 people on their mailing list? I have met the best people I know, and done the best advocacy for animals, through these two groups. 7. Appreciate every single day I have with my 14 and 1/2 year old dog, Myshkin. 8. Talk both PETA and BAV into using Myshkin's image on important publications like calendars, annual reviews, etc. 9. I would be OK meeting Matt Gonzalez, too. 10. Think up and memorize new jokes and sarcastic responses so that I can finally hold my own during the post-leafleting dinners. Any help with this would be much appreciated.
