Guest guest
Hi folks I am a bit wary of trying new restaurants right when they open, so I was pleasantly surprised at the great experience at SF's newest vegetarian restaurant, Layonna's at 1829 Clement St. http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/display.htm?id=727 Overall, we really enjoyed the friendly & attentive service, good food, nice ambience of the restaurant. At first glance, I wasn't particulary inspired by the menu ... Finally selected the seaweed roll $5.95 as an appetizer, won ton soup $6.95, braised tofu in brown sauce $7.95, and the sweet & sour pork $7.95. I would definitely recommend the braised tofu served with napa cabbage, carrots & broccoli - big triangles of the tastiest tofu I've ever had. It wasn't plain tofu, but was flavored and had a really good texture. The won ton soup was good, too. They have a seating area in the front of the restaurant and more seating in the back, too. Their tables include some larger, round tables, so we're thinking we may have to organize a group dinner there as it would be fun to sample a variety of different dishes. The one flaw to the evening - it was about 50 degrees outside and it was also cold inside. We peeked inside Bok Choy Garden, which is across the street and under new ownership. They have spruced it up abit -- with red cloth napkins & tablecloths, removed all the handwritten specials boards -- and it was also warm inside. The menu seemed the same (we were told by the former owner that the chef was staying on). Cheers,Tammy __ "This is my protest against the conduct of the world. To be a vegetarian is to disagree--to disagree with the course of things today. Starvation, world hunger, cruelty, waste, wars--we must make a statement against these things. Vegetarianism is my statement and I think it's a strong one." -- Isaac Bashevis Singer
