Guest guest
We are the Bay Area Vegetarians (general books) book club. We started meeting in January of 2006 and our plan is to meet 8 times a year to discuss books (mostly novels and occasionally interesting nonfiction or other types of books) over a vegan meal or snack. We're currently a core, stable group of 6. Right now we have 5 women and 1 man, 5 vegans and 1 lacto-ovo vegetarian. 5 of us live in San Francisco and 1 of us lives in Santa Cruz. (We are planning to have one of our 2007 meetings at Dharmas in Capitola.) We all decide which books to read and where to meet each time, trying to choose books and meeting places a month or two or more in advance. We occasionally change our meeting dates/times in order to try to accommodate everyone's schedules; we're flexible in that way. We have a group email list for communication purposes and also have a phone number for everyone for same day cancellations and inquires. If you join us, you will participate with all the group members in choosing books and meeting places and dates to meet. One or more members can often help with transportation for another member - just ask. For 2007, we would like to add 1 or 2 people to participate in our friendly book discussions over vegan food. You can be vegan, vegetarian, or an omnivore, but, as a group, we do eat (delicious!) vegan food only. Our tentative 2007 schedule for books discussed & meeting places: Sunday, January 21: The Rent Tent by Anita Diament ( a novel) at a place and time to be determined soon Sunday. March 26: book and a place and time to be determined soon Sunday, April 23: Sunday, June 25: Sunday, July 22: Sunday, September 23: Sunday, October 28: Sunday, sometime in December, earlier than 12/23: FYI: Our 2006 books discussed & meeting places: Sunday, January 22: The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (a novel) at 5:00 at Shangri-La in San Francisco Sunday, March 26: Middlesex: A Novel by Jeffrey Eugenides (a novel) at 5:00 at Golden Era in San Francisco Sunday, April 23: The Time Travelers' Wife by Audrey Niffenegger (a novel) at a special time: 4:00 at Bay Leaf Café in Palo Alto Sunday, June 18 (3rd Sunday of the month): The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon (a novel) at 5:00 at Cafe Gratitude 9th Avenue in San Francisco Sunday, July 23: My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult (a novel) at 5:00 at Cha-Ya on Valencia in San Francisco Sunday, September 24: Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks (a novel) at 4:00 at Maggie Mudd on Cortland in San Francisco Sunday, November, 12 The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd (a novel) at 5:00 at Herbivore on Valencia in San Francisco Sunday, December 10 Reading Lolita in Tehran by Azar Nafisi (a memoir) at 2:30 at Bok Choy Garden in San Francisco So, if you love to read and enjoy eating vegan food, and would like to be part of an interesting and supportive group of people, please consider joining us.
