Guest guest
Most of the old religions have fasting as part of their core teachings, some order or suggest their followers to fast at a determined part of the year, or at a certain day of the week/month, etc. When we become vegetarians, we are just restoring the natural eating stage in our bodies. In the animal kingdom, the recent born in a species that are carnivores can eat meat right away such as the lion who can eat meat almost after it's born. Humans, in the other hand would die if we eat meat right away, we have to wait until the baby's body defense mechanism is strong enough to handle the poison that meat brings into it. And when our bodies are old enough, some of those defenses begin to deteriorate and can't handle the meats/dairies, etc. it's so much that most doctors when we are sick, recommend to be off from heavy items such as meat. In our bodies, the type of food that we eat in descending order of heaviness is: Red Meat (beef)->White Meat (chicken and pork) -> fish -> vegetables -> fruits When we fast, our bodies begin to eat itself, mostly from stored fat, muscle, etc except that nature is so smart that it also it also begins to eat the old and deteriorated cells, including cells that are sick, this is so where studies have shown that most tumors, go down one third of their original size after just 3 days of fasting (just water). We shouldn't be fasting if we have a medical condition that doesn't allow us to stop eating. However, most of us WE CAN TRAIN our bodies to fast little by little. Many years ago, I started to skip breakfast one day a week, then after a couple weeks I was able to skip lunch and so on.., eventually I got my body trained to go fasting around once a month for few days.. Now days, when I start on my week of fasting, On a Monday, I would eat only heavy fruits such as bananas, avocado, mangos, etc. by the third day I drink only juice and then I switch to water. My energy level does not deteriorate, by the contrary I feel very strong and can do what I am used to do. I know of many people that can fast for over 10 days with just water, so it is possible. A combination of exercise, proper food, attitude, and meditation can do wanders to our bodies. There are some clinics, that specialize in changing patience's diet to cure sicknesses and follow vegetarian diets during their clinical stay such us the one in Northern California by Dr Gupta, etc. I remember a friend of mine that used to take 14 pills a day that the doctors have prescribed him for blood pressure, cholesterol, heart, etc. when he started to meditate at age 75, became vegetarian change his attitude and after 6 months his health improved a lot and didn't need any pills at all (based on his doctors new findings). Listen to your bodies, never force the engine to do what it can't do yet. Peace. -Rafael
