DawnWatch: Rooney on vegetarianism on 60 Minutes -- 10/1/06

The commentary from Andy Rooney on the Sunday, October 1, 60 Minutes (CBS)

is well worth checking out. It isn't a rousing endorsement for

vegetarianism, but considering the curmudgeonly source, it is a welcome

surprise. You can view the video or read the transcript at:

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/09/28/60minutes/rooney/main2048965.shtml

OR http://tinyurl.com/rb2at

Here is how Rooney ends the piece:

" I like steak, lamb and pork chops but you couldn't make me eat rabbit or

horse. When I was in France during World War II, horses would often be

killed in the fields by artillery fire and the French farmers would wait

until the shooting stopped and then rush out to carve up the dead horses for

dinner.

" I don't know why anyone who eats beef finds the idea of eating a horse so

repulsive but I'm one of them. Horses seem so friendly and I don't like to

be reminded of the animal I'm eating. I often pass a farm with cows grazing

in the field and I think to myself how terrible it is that human beings grow

other animals just to kill them and eat them.

" Most of us think of vegetarians as nuts and I'm not a vegetarian but I

wouldn't be surprised if we came to a time in 50 or 100 years when civilized

people everywhere refused to eat animals. I could be one of them.

" Of course, I'd be pretty old by then. "

Please go to the page linked above, read or listen to Rooney's commentary,

then click on " Go to Comments. " You will have to register with CBS in order

to post a comment but the moment of inconvenience will help the animals. An

enthusiastic viewer response to media coverage of animal issues encourages

similar coverage in the future.

Note: Though some of what Rooney says is objectionable (I doubt anybody on

this list views vegetarians as nuts) please make sure your comments are

more for the animals than against anything you might dislike in the piece.

The media are incomparably powerful, and the best thing we can do for the

animals is make every possible effort to bring the media on side. Rooney

seems to be grudgingly headed in the right direction, so let's warmly

encourage the shift.

Thanks to those who made sure we saw the piece -- and I send a huge thank

you to all who respond to the media and encourage animal friendly coverage.

Yours and the animals',

Karen Dawn
