Guest guest
I wanted to thank Alicia, Tammy, and Sara who organized the Bay Area Veg tabling outreach at Solano Stroll yesterday (Sunday). This was my first time tabling, and it just FELT SO GOOD! Bay Area Veg had a really nice shade awning for us to stand underneath, and the weather was just as sunny and beautiful as can be. So it felt like we were relaxing out on a deck on a gorgeous day. Except ... we were doing vegan outreach! It was so heart- warming to see how many people came by wanting to pick up and read more information about being vegetarian. Lots of them had heard about it but didn't understand the reasons behind it, or the practicality of it, etc., but lucky for them, we had many different varieties of pamphlets there to show them how. Also, quite a few people were vegetarian already, and they seemed VERY grateful for the chance to pick up info from the Physicians Committee on Responsible Medicine regarding how to stay healthy, plus recipes etc. AND, we put in lots of plugs for the Bay Area Veg web site. We told them about the veg dinners, hiking, camping, book clubs, letter-writing parties, cooking classes, etc, all posted and ready for them to learn about on BayAreaVeg.com. People were really amazed. They had no idea all of this was going on. Alicia, Randy, and Terry were all volunteering and they were such NATURALS at talking to everyone, giving them information without being pushy. I really learned a lot from them. It was just wonderful. It was really cool that we had such awesome supplies, too. It seems that Alicia and Tammy asked for the pamphlets in advance and PETA et al. sent whole boxes of them ... so we never ran out. We had all these eye-catching stickers with slogans like " I am not a nugget " (with a cartoon chicken) or " Boiling hurts " (with a cartoon lobster), etc and Terry got the idea of asking people that walked by, do you want a free sticker? Lots of people stopped and put on the stickers ... so thanks to Terry, we had lots of FREE advertising walking around the Solano street fair. Randy's wife made these INCREDIBLE cranberry-nut-I-don't-know-what-else cookies, and it was so cool to hand them out and for people to take a bite saying " THIS is vegan? " Bottom line, it was just WAY AWESOME! I feel so inspired now. Many thanks to all the volunteers who got this together. I hope this messaeg will inspire even more people to participate, so we can keep doing many more tabling events like this! Peace and love, Rachel
