I believe Shangri-la puts sugar on their fried bananas, > I just read in the UG. Hi Pat and everyone I wanted to say that Shangri-La, as well as other restaurants like Golden Era, actually list themselves as vegetarian restaurants. For example, on GE's website, they say: "With respect for all life, we proudly serve all dishes free of meat, poultry, fish, egg, and MSG." (Notice, they do not say "dairy".) For the Ultimate Guide, categories such as vegan, vegetarian, vegan-friendly, and vegetarian-friendly were created to make it easier to classify restaurants. Within UG, we have defined the category for vegan to be "vegan/primarily vegan". Therefore, Shangri-La (which has egg as an optional ingredient in one of their soups) or Golden Era (which has dairy in some of their drinks and I think the flan) are listed as "vegan". And, of course, when dining out at any restaurant (especially for the first time), it easy to ask about specific ingredients in dishes as restaurants do change suppliers or ingredients. For example, if I'm at a raw restaurant, I always ask if they use honey (as many raw foodists prefer honey over other sweeteners) Here's a link to the glossary definitions for UG categories: http://www.bayareaveg.org/ug/glossary.htm#definitions And for anyone new to the list, the Ultimate Guide is a searchable online database listing vegetarian foods and service. There is also a "Veg Food Finder" feature to enter a specific address and search radius, and it will provide an google map with nearest veg food sources marked. Most recently we introduced an expanded print version "Vegetarian Bay Area: The Ultimate Guide". We appreciate all the updates people provide to help us maintain current and accurate listings in UG. And the reviews are my favorite part. I enjoy reading other's opinions of restaurants.
