Dear Tammy and list,

Thank you for the warning about hidden animal products in so-called "vegetarian" dishes in "mixed" restaurants. Shangri-la on Irving Street at 22nd Avenue in San Francisco has special vegan fortune cookies, but you have to request them.

Best wishes, Bonnie Knight, San Francisco

If they tout themselves as vegan, this is very very disappointing news. Seems vegan fortune cookies should be the practice, not the exception. BTW, I understand white sugar is not vegan due to the way it's processed through charred animal bones. I believe Shangri-la puts sugar on their fried bananas, I just read in the UG.

Living lightly and with ease,

Hi folks

There was a recent discussion about the fortune cookies at the vegetarian restaurant Shangri-La on Irving Street in San Francisco tonite (see above statement).

I was dining there tonite and was told that they have only one fortune cookie that they offer, and it is not vegan. It has milk, no eggs, but it is kosher. This information came directly from William, who is the owner of the restaurant.
