Guest guest
Hi. I have three rescue chickens. Our most recent arrival is from berkeley animal control. The other two chickens pick on her. I finally just separated them yeterday and would like another chicken to live with her in one fenced area away from the other two. If you have a rescue chicken that is female and friendly towards other chickens, please let me know as I really need to find a friend for mine soon. They have a huge yard to run around in, plenty of food and water, and I promise that she would live out her life here in Marin in a very nice set up. Thanks, Alicia fsdmail
Guest guest
Hi, As someone who has taken in a lot of chickens, I thought I should mention that at first they always pick on the newcomer. But after a while they usually stop, once the pecking order is established and it will be like nothing negative was ever between them. One way to alleviate the problem is to house the new chicken in a cage within the chicken run/house (protected from the elements of course), so that they can get used to her through the wire and not cause serious damage. I keep large dog crates around for that, as well as when I need to isolate a chicken from the flock. I do that for about a week, and then let her out on a day I'm home and keep an eye on them. (Note that dog crates are not predator-proof, so you can't keep them in reach of predators, which can literally grab them and pull them through the wire piece by piece.) Roosters are different, but for a hen that usually works. It's also helpful not to keep them in too tight of a space initially, so they can get away from each other. Although, I hope you adopt a new chicken anyway. :> Good luck, Cheryl
