Guest guest
June 4, 2006 I saw Gore's global warming documentary last night, in a packed theater--men, women and children of all ages. Without being overly dramatic, I think it's the single most important film ever made, with horrendously dire consequences for the planet and all its life forms, should we not take appropriate actions. Alfredo is right. Theaters would be the perfect venue to leaflet. Print out the attachments, make copies, and hit the streets. Some Letters to the Editor would be helpful, too. Cheers, Eric Mills, coordinator ACTION FOR ANIMALS P.S. - Gore for President? George Bush has said that he " probably wouldn't see the film. " 06/04/06 ATTENTION BAY AREA ANIMAL ACTIVISTS GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO EDUCATE AND CONVERT PEOPLE TO VEGETARIANS AND VEGANS. Right now theaters are showing AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, a movie about global warming featuring Al Gore. According to NASA scientists, the biggest source of greenhouse gasses causing global warming come from METHANE gasses, which derived from animal based agriculture and not CO2's from automobiles and industrial emission. Attached is a pdf flier anyone can download and print cheaply at your local Office Depot for about 4 cents a copy and distribute at a theater near you where the movie is playing. Once this movie is gone, we won't have another opportunity like it. Guest guest
I hate to be the killjoy, but this pamphlet is full of incorrect information, which undermines its message. I strongly urge whoever wrote this pamphlet to fact check and revise, and I hope that animal advocates will hold off on distributing this flyer. As a committed vegan and environmentalist, I believe that accuracy will get the public on our side more than anything else. There is a case to be made that meat contributes to global warming (clear cutting forests for grazing, for starters!) but this pamphlet makes the wrong argument based on the wrong facts. For example, "METHANE GAS, which is derived from animal based agriculture, is 21 times more powerful than CO2’s from cars and industrial plants combined" is incorrect. One *molecule* of methane traps 21 times more heat than one *molecule* of CO2, but methane emissions are small compared to CO2 emissions. And even if you were concerned about methane, you would go after landfills and pipelines before animal agriculture.More than 70% of greenhouse gas emissions are methane and NO2? False. About 95% of GHG emissions are CO2 (and most of that due to transportation), even taking into account methane's enhanced heat-trapping ability. Also, the pamphlet mentions Dr. James Hansen, but his argument is misrepresented by the pamphlet, just as it was misrepresented by the media. His point was basically that soot and methane emissions are "low hanging fruit": you can reduce their emissions easily, and it would make a measurable improvement. However, he also agrees with the consensus view that CO2 is the root cause.Anyway, here is some reading to start with:http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2004/12/just-what-is-this-consensus-anyway/http://yosemite.epa.gov/oar/globalwarming.nsf/UniqueKeyLookup/RAMR6P5M5M/$File/06FastFacts.pdfhttp://www.grida.no/climate/ipcc_tar/wg1/044.htm#131http://www.realclimate.org/ is an amazing resource - it is considered the most authoritative science blog about climate science, written by real climate scientists (some who even work with Dr. Hansen!).On Jun 4, 2006, at 12:03 PM, Eric wrote:Alfredo is right.
