Dairy and sinus problems

Hi, does anyone know of scientific studies demonstrating a link between dairy products and sinus problems. My nephew has chronic seasonal sinus problems and my sister will only consider changing his diet if I can show her scientific evidence linking it to dairy consumption. Years ago I convinced her to be a vegetarian for health reasons (she wouldn't listen to the ethical arguments at the time) and afterwards she became a staunch ethical vegetarian. Maybe she will become and equally staunch vegan after she is convinced to become a vegan for reasons of health....Marti

When I was growing up, the conventional wisdom (i.e, mom) used to say that you

should not

drink milk when you have a cough.

From this site: http://www.milksucks.co.uk/mucus.html

(quote)

According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, cow’s

milk is the number one-cause of food allergies in children. According to the

former director of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Frank Oski, there

is evidence to indicate that up to half of U.S. children have some allergic

reaction to milk. For these kids (and for adults who are allergic to dairy

foods), milk is a mucus maker and can lead to persistent problems such as

chronic coughs and sinus infections, asthma, and ear infections.

(end quote)

Hope this helps,

Ajay

Why wait on science? Although I know the results are out there, and a

medline search or even webmd or about.com might turn up something, a

simple home experiment can validate anecdotal evidence the world over.

Ask your sister to eliminate dairy from his diet for one month--just

one month. That should be just short enough that she won't freak out

and just long enough for him to feel some fantastic results. You can

even make a wager or a deal out of it with your sister. If he doesn't

feel a thousand times better at the end of the month, you can't say

another word about it until you have credible scientific studies to

back you up. I'm sure it's a wager everyone will end up winning.

Cheers!
