Guest guest
Foster Farms Employee Crushed by 5 Feet of Animal Feed San Jose Mercury News Posted on Fri, Mar. 24, 2006 DELHI, Calif. (AP) - An employee of a large poultry plant was badly hurt after he fell into a silo and was crushed by 5 feet of animal feed. Kevin Southerland, 52, was trying to remove corn stuck on the wall of a 150-foot-tall silo on Wednesday when the feed fell on him, said Dean Fryer, a spokesman for the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. Police officers dug an unconscious Southerland out with their bare hands. Southerland was in critical condition Thursday, hospital spokesman John Gilbert said. The state job safety agency was investigating Foster Farms, which owns the feed mill. The company could be fined if investigators find violations of workplace safety rules, Fryer said. Foster Farms is also looking into the incident, said Tim Walsh, a spokesman for the poultry processing company.
