Food for trip

Hi all,

I'm getting ready to embark on a three week scientific cruise in the Bahamas. Unfortunately the ship I'm on isn't really "vegan" friendly, therefore, I'd really appreciate any tips, suggestions or advice. They will have a salad bar everyday and I'm considering asking them to prepare vegetables for me aside from what they normally cook (w/o butter) and possibly potatoes and anything else that I can eat.

I'll be taking with me - soy jerky, protein powder, packaged beans, nuts, protein bars, soy milk, and anything else that I can find that is lightweight, has protein and will hopefully hold me over the whole time I'm gone.

Does anyone have suggestions for other food that I can take? How do you handle "buffet" eating when you don't know the ingredients of the food? Do you use a general guide line? - Pasta? Breads? - What are usually considered "animal free foods" - even veggie burgers sometimes have animal products.

Again, I'm a recent vegan (vegetarian for 4 years) and have recently converted, so any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kim

Hi, Kim.

I have done a lot of traveling since becoming vegan. You have done

some good planning, and I'm sure you'll do fine. One type of food I

always bring along is dry soups, the kind that come in single

servings. There are a lot of them that are vegan, and they are very

light weight, which is a consideration when you have to lug around a

heavy suitcase. Rice and corn cakes are also good to bring and light

weight. If you have access to very hot water (hotel coffee pot,

often for me) you can have a nice meal of soup and corn cakes.

As for eating at the salad bar, I usually stick to the single

ingredient foods - lettuce, beans, veggies, tofu if you're lucky.

For dressing, they usually have oil and vinegar and other thin

looking dressings that are usually vegan. (There are usually servers

setting out the dishes. They can often find out what is in the salad

dressings.) For breads, I've found from reading labels elsewhere that

sour dough bread is usually vegan, others often not.

Hope you have a wonderful trip.

Kim and everybody planning to travel or go backpacking:

I'm constantly on the go (even when I'm still in the Bay Area), and

one of my favorite things to eat is the DRIED SOUPS from the BULK

FOODS BINS at Whole Foods or Rainbow Grocery, etc. All you have to

do is add hot water, wait five minutes, and VOILA! A tasty vegan

soup, packed with protein, is YOURS! Of course, the bulk soups are

much better for traveling than the Nile or Fantastic Foods Cups

because you can fit lots of your favorite soup in a ziplock bag

without taking up much space.

My favorites from the bulk foods bins are:

1) The Southwest Corn Chowder (very tasty without extra seasoning)

2) The Lentil Soup (I add cajun seasoning because I like my food

HOT! I'm from Texas, what can I say ...)

3) The Split Pea Soup (again, I like to spice it up)

Mmmm, these are SO GOOD! And be sure to check out the nutrient info

on these buggers ... the fiber and protein content will blow your

mind! (or your colon?) :-) And Kim, with the nuts and soy you're

already bringing, plus the protein from these dried soups, I don't

think you'll even need the protein powder. Oh, you might think of

bringing a small ziplock bag of nutritional yeast, too? You could

sprinkle it on top of your salads, or on top of pasta with marinara

sauce. And maybe a bottle of Bragg's aminos to pour on top of

steamed veggies. Good luck on your cruise!

And Happy Vegan Travels Everybody,

Rachel
