Immediate Help Needed to Defeat SB 880: The Kangaroo Killing Bill

(from Eric Mills, Action for Animals)

As you know, SB 880, the bill that would end the longstanding ban on kangaroo skin products in California, has passed the state assembly and is now on the Governor's desk. In order to prevent this bill from becoming law, we need to deluge his office with messages urging his veto of this cruel and regressive "special interest" legislation being pushed by Adidas and other international corporations.

I have an idea to help inspire public calls to Schwarzenegger's office, and I need some volunteers. I have about 7,000 color flyers from VIVA!, an organization that has been working on this issue for years (kudos to Lauren Ornelas for her efforts). I've composed a half-page of contact info for the Governor's office (telephone, fax, e-mail), which I'll be stapling to those flyers. I'm hoping to leaflet at the Bay Area zoos (San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose, Sacramento), and need volunteers to join me. I also have done some posters. Probably weekends are best. This seems a likely target audience for us--many of the state's zoos have kangaroos on exhibit (both the red and the grey are at the S.F. Zoo, the very species to be killed, should SB 880 pass).

A friend had a great idea: leafleters could carry their cell phones with them, then have interested members of the public call the governor on the spot. Another possibility would be inserting the flyers in a stack of the free weeklies on every street corner: the Bay Guardian, SF Weekly, East Bay Express, etc. Long movie lines are also a great place to leaflet.

But time is short: we need to act now to convince the Governor to do the right thing!

If you can help with the stapling (Thursday and Friday during the day, here at my home in Oakland), or leaflet any of the zoos mentioned, or simply want copies of the flyers to distribute, please contact me ASAP.

Also please call Governor Schwarzenegger and urge him to veto SB 880, and ask your friends and family to do the same! You don't have to speak with anyone: just call (916) 445-2841 and enter 1, 2, 1, 2 in response to the prompts. Many thanks,
