Sept 8th 7 PM!Wed, 5 Sep 2007 03:53:19 +0200 Foie Gras Protest this Saturday Sept. 8th 7 PM at Bigelow Grille! Last month, as you probably remember, Trilogy restaurant downtown signed a written commitment to permanently stop selling foie gras, marking the latest success in our Foie Gras-Free Pittsburgh campaign. Shortly after we discovered that another upscale downtown restaurant, Bigelow Grille, is also selling foie gras. In fact, Bigelow Grille lists 3 different entrees on its menu where foie gras is featured, including a foie gras sandwich. Voices For Animals sent Bigelow Grille a letter, along with video footage of undercover investigations at foie gras farms and additional information about the inherent cruelty of foie gras production, asking Bigelow Grille to remove foie gras from their menu permanently and to no longer sell or serve it in the future. To this date, Bigelow Grille has ignored our letter and the deadline for their response is the end of this week. Therefore, we are planning a protest outside Bigelow Grille on Saturday night in the event that the restaurant doesn’t respond to us by Friday. This protest will be from 7 PM-9 PM, Saturday, September 8th, outside Bigelow Grille at Bigelow Square downtown. We will send out a confirmation email on Thursday night to confirm for sure if the protest is happening, but for now just plan that it will be. WHEN: Saturday, September 8, 7:00-9:00 PM WHERE: Bigelow Grille, One Bigelow Square, Downtown, Pittsburgh, 15219 (where Centre Ave. ends into 6th Ave.) If you are new to Pittsburgh and unfamiliar with the area and would prefer to ride down on the bus with a group, a VFA volunteer will meet people outside the 5th Avenue side of the William Pitt Union (Univ . of Pittsburgh, 5 th & Bigelow) at 6:15 PM on Saturday. If you are taking the bus, you can take any of the downtown buses - the 71A, 71C, 71D, 61A, 61B, & 61C will leave you off the closest at Diamond & Boyd, and it’s an easy walk from there. The bus that gets you the closest is the 500, which will leave you off at 5th & 6th. Also, please call, write, and email Bigelow Grille and ask them to permanently commit not to sell or serve foie gras at the restaurant: Bigelow Grille Regional Cooking & BarKevin Sousa, Executive ChefTodd McCullough, General ManagerOne Bigelow Square - DowntownPittsburgh, PA 15219412.281.5013412.281.4208 faxbschaaf Foie gras production is nothing short of animal torture. Ducks and geese are force fed through a long tube up to a third of their body weight in food each day until their liver is enlarged up to ten times its normal size, causing a serious and painful liver disease called hepatic lipidosis. This literally makes foie gras a disease marketed as a delicacy. Force feeding wreaks such terrible havoc on these birds' bodies that many ducks are not able to walk or even stand up properly. Past investigations at foie gras farms have revealed conditions of the most horrific nature. Ducks were kept in such tight confinement that little room is allowed for any movement, ducks are denied any water to swim in, and many ducks were uncovered who were severely sick or dying from disease, infection, and force-feeding induced conditions, such as aspiration pneumonia and their stomachs literally burst open from being overstuffed with food. A newly released investigation into the foie gras industry in Canada revealed appalling abuse where ducks are kicked and bashed to death by workers, and ducks’ heads are even ripped off. This proves even further the universal cruelty inherent to foie gras production.
