Please Protest Destruction of Colombian Rainforests to Feed Automobiles

 

 

Dear friends,

 

Please write to the Colombian authorities today and ask them to protect

local communities and biodiverse rainforests instead of supporting palm oil

expansion for biofuels. Colombia's government is embarking on an aggressive

policy of biofuel expansion, much of it from palm oil. Palm oil companies,

aided by state forces and paramilitaries, are destroying some of the most

biodiverse forests on earth, and are responsible for murder, intimidation

and evictions against the local communities who hold legal rights to land in

Curvaradó and Jiguamindo. According to an observer from the World

Rainforest Movement: " There are few places in the world where oil palm

trees are tainted with as much blood as in Curvaradó and the only way of

starting to repair the outrages committed is for the Government to legally

recognize these communities' rights to their lands. " This email alert is

supported by the Inter-Church Commission for Justice and Peace, a Colombian

NGO which supports the communities of Curvaradó and Jiguamindo. The email
