Urgent action: The Texas Whooping Cranes May Lose Their Habitat Tuesday, 6:44 AM

Your action is needed by September 1, 2007.[The Wilderness Society]

The Aransas National Wildlife Refuge near San Antonio Bay is a marvelous place, full of migrating birds in season, and one of few places in the United States that offer a memorable chance to see one of the 236 whooping cranes remaining in the wild. Now these vital wintering grounds are threatened by developers.

Help us preserve their habitat. Take action now.

The cranes are protected in the U.S. by the Endangered Species Act (ESA), and by international migratory bird treaties. While the cranes rely on the refuge for wintering needs, they regularly forage on lands outside its boundaries - including those lands likely to be affected by housing development. Critical Habitat under the ESA has been designated in the area on and surrounding the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge, including a considerable area in San Antonio Bay and adjacent uplands. With the cranes' population still precarious, nearby development needs to be carefully scrutinized for its impact on the whooping cranes.

Please join us in asking the Army Corps of Engineers to deny the permit for this 700-acre development until adequate studies can be done about its effects.

Thanks for all you do for the wildlife and the wilderness!
